In response, libraries have provided Selective Dissemination of Information SDI services, in which librarians choose information that may be of interest to their users and forward it to them before the users request it. The changes in libraries outlined above originated in the United States and other English-speaking countries. But electronic networks do not have geographic boundaries, and their influence has spread rapidly.

Librarians have begun to work in the information industry as salespeople, designers of new information systems, researchers, and information analysts.
